VIRIDYN 101-DM: PFAS-free Hydrophobic Performance for Polyethylene Membranes

The Challenge:

A global membrane manufacturer was faced with significant demand from EU customers for PFAS-free products that would comply with tightening sustainability regulations. The manufacturer needed a PFAS-free nano-coating alternative to the fluorinated material that it was currently using. For this high-performance membrane product, the following specifications were essential:

  • Hydrophobic Performance (contact angle to water > 90°)

  • Temperature Resistance > 130° C

  • Oleophobic Performance at grade 3

  • Solvent Resistance

  • Dip Application compatible

  • Polyethylene substrate compatible

The Solution:

ViriDyn and partners recalibrated an existing formulation to provide 100% fluorocarbon-free membrane performance that exceeded the EU definition of PFAS-free which technically allows for trace amounts of fluorinated material.

By using VIRIDYN 101-DM, a fluorocarbon-free nano-coating, the manufacturer was able to reassure its EU-based customers that their products would be future-proofed against changing sustainability and PFAS regulations.

ViriDyn worked closely with the manufacturer to prototype the new PFAS-free membrane and to optimise the application process to minimise material wastage and reduce time expenditure.

VIRIDYN 101-DM 20% concentration was chosen for the high percentage of solids that would offer increased protection against solvents without occluding membrane pores or significantly increasing cure time.

ViriDyn works closely with membrane manufacturers to create high-performance surfaces that are PFAS-free, sustainable, and future-proof in the face of changing regulations in the EU and UK markets. To speak with a ViriDyn engineer, please contact us.
