VIRIDYN 101-X: Transparent, Hydrophobic Abrasion Protection for Lenses

The Challenge:

A medical device manufacturer was in the process of developing a new surgical scope. During the testing process the manufacturers realised that the optical lens would frequently come into contact with other devices being used during the procedure. This contact abrasion caused the lens to become scratched, significantly reducing visibility for the operator.

The device manufacturer required a robust protective lens coating with the following characteristics:

  • Abrasion resistant

  • Transparent with zero effect on optical clarity

  • Hydrophobic, bio-fluid repellant

The Solution:

ViriDyn and partners worked closely with the device manufacturer throughout the prototyping and testing phases, supporting the engineers as they fine-tuned the coating application techniques and iterated the product design.

The optimal coating for the lens was determined to be 101-X with a relatively high solids concentration of 8%. This formulation was chosen for the following properties:

  • High solids concentration amplifying durability and abrasion resistance.

  • Excellent hydrophobicity and bio-fluid repellency properties.

  • Transparent finish for uncompromised optical clarity.

  • Ultra-thin profile that does not affect dynamics of lens and scope device.

  • Easy to apply, rework, and integrate into device manufacturing process.
