VIRIDYN: PFAS-Free Conformal Nano-Coatings for Advanced Electronics

Helping Electronics OEMs Move Beyond PFAS Conformal Coatings

Manufacturers of advanced electronics from medical devices to automotive control systems are under pressure to boost board‑level reliability while eliminating PFAS from their supply chains. ViriDyn works with these OEMs to deliver ultra‑thin conformal coatings that shield circuit boards and sensitive components from water, chemicals, and corrosion, while remaining PFAS‑free and non‑flammable.

The challenge

For years, many OEMs have depended on ultra‑thin fluorinated coatings to protect densely populated, high‑value circuit boards without adding weight, thickness, or process complexity. With PFAS restrictions tightening and legacy materials such as 3M Novec 1700 now discontinued and increasingly difficult to justify, manufacturers need replacements that preserve performance, maintain throughput, and reduce EHS and regulatory risk.

The ViriDyn solution

VIRIDYN 101‑XP‑300 (2%) is an electronic‑grade nano‑coating engineered for printed circuit boards and sensitive electronic assemblies. It forms a transparent film of roughly 0.5–1.0 μm, achieves a water contact angle above 100°, and delivers anti‑wetting, anti‑stiction, anti‑migration, and anti‑corrosion protection. The coating is PFAS‑free, low in toxicity, non‑ozone‑depleting, and provided in a non‑flammable formulation. 101-XP-300 is masking-optional, a point of critical importance to process line cost-efficiencies. 101-XP-300 formulations can also be RF-transparent.

Why OEMs are adopting it

101-XP-300 is an innovative coating that protects electronic assemblies exposed to condensation, road salts, lubricants and thermal shock. It provides an ultra‑thin protective layer for assemblies where weight, dielectric performance, optical and RF transparency, and long‑term reliability are all critical. Because it dries in 5–30 seconds and can be applied by dip, spray, spin, flow, or selective dispensing, it drops into existing production lines with minimal process change and no need for complex cure schedules.

What makes 101-XP-300 different?

Unlike conventional thicker conformal coatings, VIRIDYN 101‑XP‑300 (2%) is designed to deliver robust protection with minimal added film build. Masking can be optional at lower concentrations, an additional heat cure is optional, and an integrated UV tracer can be specified to enable rapid in‑line quality control. The coating is solder‑through repairable and maintains strong dielectric performance, including a dielectric constant of 3.0 at 1 kHz and a dielectric breakdown strength of 3000 V/mil.

The result

ViriDyn enables leading OEMs to phase out or replace PFAS‑based conformal coatings while maintaining the high‑performance protection their designs require. The outcome is a new generation of board‑level protection that supports reliability, manufacturing efficiency, and PFAS‑free product roadmaps.
