VIRIDYN SH-1: Essential Medical Devices
The Challenge:
ViriDyn was contacted by a medical device company that manufactures kits for draining and collecting fluids that are expelled from body cavities after surgical and other procedures. Examples of these types of fluids are blood, serum, pleural or peritoneal exudate. It was vital to be able to accurately measure the volume of these fluids in order to ensure the patient’s clinical stability.
The customer required a cost-effective superhydrophobic and oleophobic nano-coating that would prevent these biological fluids from coagulating and adhering to the device walls. This would include tubing, connectors and collecting chambers. Without this type of coating, the end-users of the medical devices (such as critical care units) would be unable to accurately measure the volume of drained fluids, preventing a clear assessment of the volume loss and increasing the risk to clinical safety.
The customers requirements for the coating were:
Superhydrophobic and oleophobic
Ease of application for efficient manufacturing
Cost-effectiveness for high-volume device production
The Solution:
ViriDyn and partners worked closely with the customer to identify an easily applicable, cost-effective formulation with high-grade superhydrophobic and oleophobic properties. A formulation of VIRIDYN SH-1 was identified as the best solution, enabling the medical device company to continue to provide a live-saving product at an accessible cost to its customers.
In addition to helping the customer meet its current requirements, ViriDyn and partners were able to offer a solution that would empower the medical device company to continue its manufacturing growth trajectory by ensuring a quality-controlled, reliable, and cost-efficient supply of VIRIDYN SH-1.
